The Season Is Winding Down. The Adventures Aren’t.
There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over a marina in October. Slips empty out. Boat covers go on. The water gets that steel-grey look it holds until spring. And if you’re anything like most boaters, you stand there for a minute before you walk away, replaying the summer in your head.
That moment is worth honouring.
Maybe it was a weekend you’d been planning for months — a long passage, a new anchorage, a poker run with friends you only see on the water. Maybe it was something smaller: a Tuesday evening cruise that turned into a three-hour sunset, your kids learning to set an anchor for the first time, the morning a pod of dolphins showed up uninvited off the bow. The boat was there for all of it.
Before You Put It Away
Winter storage is a task, not a ceremony — but there are things worth doing while the season is still fresh in your mind. That funny noise the engine made in August? Write it down now, before you convince yourself it was nothing. The chafe on the dock lines, the small crack in the seat cushion, the navigation light that flickers in cold weather — these are the things you’ll forget about until May, and spend a frustrated June morning fixing.
Make the list. Fix what you can before it goes into storage. Leave yourself a note for the yard.
The Safety Gear Audit
End of season is the right time to check what needs to be replaced before next year. Flares have expiry dates. Lifejackets should be inspected for wear and proper fit — especially if children in your family have grown. The fire extinguisher should be examined, not assumed. A few minutes now means you start next season ready.
Plan Something
The boat is going away, but the planning doesn’t have to. Where do you want to go next year that you haven’t been before? What’s the passage you’ve been putting off? Is there a show, a poker run, or a cruising event you want to build a season around?
Write it down somewhere you’ll find it in March. That’s how a good season starts — with the seed of an idea planted over winter.
Your boat has a story. There are more chapters ahead.
C-Tow will be there for all of them. c-tow.ca.
