The days are short, the water is cold, and your boat is probably either tucked away or about to be. If you haven’t winterized yet, you’ve still got time, and a thorough cleaning should be at the top of the list. It’s not the most glamorous job of the season, but it’s one of the best things you can do for your boat. Put in a few hours now and you’ll thank yourself in May, when you open the hatch to fresh air instead of a science experiment.
The Real Winter Enemy: Moisture
Boats don’t sit still over winter. They breathe, trap humidity, and hold damp in places you rarely look. Add a closed-up cabin or a tight shrink wrap and you have the perfect recipe for mould and mildew. The usual hiding spots are:
- Upholstery and cushions
- Bilges and lockers
- Canvas, covers and enclosures
- Carpets and liners
- Anywhere under shrink wrap with poor airflow
Once mildew gets a hold, it’s stubborn, smelly, and can stain vinyl and fabric for good. The good news is that prevention is simple:
- Dry everything thoroughly. If it’s damp when you close up, it’ll be worse in March.
- Empty and clean the bilge. Remove standing water and debris, wash it out, and let it dry completely.
- Free up the cushions. Take them home if you can. If not, prop them on their edges so air can move around them.
- Let air in. Use vents, a moisture absorber, or both, and check that your shrink wrap or cover has some ventilation.
- Clean and dry canvas and covers before storing them. Packing them away dirty or damp is asking for trouble.
- Empty the fridge and coolers, wipe them down, and leave the doors propped open.
- Take off all food and drinks. Even a forgotten granola bar counts.
More Reasons to Break Out the Brush
Mould is the headliner, but a good fall clean pays you back in other ways too.
- Prevents stains and corrosion. Salt, fish blood, sunscreen, algae and grime get harder to remove the longer they sit. A freshwater rinse and wipe-down protects fittings and hardware.
- Protects your gelcoat and vinyl. Give the hull a wash and a coat of wax, and treat vinyl so it doesn’t crack or discolour over the cold months.
- Keeps the critters out. Mice and other pests love a cozy boat with crumbs and snacks. A clean, food-free cabin isn’t much of an invitation.
- Makes spring commissioning easier. Come launch time, you’ll be checking systems and not scrubbing grime.
- Helps you spot repairs early. While you’re cleaning, you’ll notice cracked seals, worn lines, soft spots, loose fittings and small leaks. Fixing them over winter means you aren’t scrambling in May when everyone else is.
Your Fall Cleaning Checklist
- Rinse the hull and deck with fresh water, then wash and wax
- Scrub the waterline and clean the bottom as needed
- Empty, clean and fully dry the bilge

Keep It Clean for the Water, Too
Protecting your boat is a good reason to clean. Protecting the water you love is an even better one. In the spirit of C-Tow’s Ripple Program, choose eco-friendly, biodegradable cleaners that are gentle on fish and shorelines. Wash your boat where wash water can be properly captured or filtered, and keep it out of storm drains and the lake. Dispose of waste, old rags, used absorbers and bilge water responsibly. Small choices add up, and every Canadian boater who makes them helps keep our waterways healthy.
Peace of Mind, Right Through to Spring
A boat that’s clean, dry and well looked-after is a boat that’s ready for the first warm weekend. And when that day comes, C-Tow will be ready too, with the same real Captains answering every call, 24/7, no bots and no call queues, from coast to coast.
