There’s a certain kind of confidence that comes with boating in Turks & Caicos. The water is impossibly clear, the horizon feels wide open, and within an hour of Providenciales you can find sandbars, coral heads, shipwrecks, and water-access-only beaches that look like they were made for a postcard.

But even in paradise, boats still break.

That’s why C-Tow is proud to support boaters in Turks & Caicos with 24/7 on-water assistance—right out of Turtle Cove—led by local commercial captain John Lawson.

A captain who knows these waters (and what they can do)

John’s path to Turks & Caicos started in Stratford, Ontario, and took him through Mechanical Engineering studies at McMaster University before life brought his family south. About 25 years ago, they made the move to Providenciales—“Provo,” as the locals call it—and never looked back.

His boating story runs even deeper. John learned to sail as a kid from his father, built his own cedar-strip rowboat outfitted with sails and a small engine, and went on to study sailing levels and race. In 1990, he took Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons courses and spent a year sailing with his wife.

In 2000, he attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Annapolis, Maryland—marking the start of his commercial captain career. Since then, he’s operated charters, ferries, and hovercraft in Turks & Caicos, and completed deliveries across TCI, Canada, the U.S., the Bahamas, and Hispaniola.

Today, John brings more than 20 years of commercial captain experience in Turks & Caicos to every call—plus the calm, methodical decision-making you want on the water when conditions change.

“It’s a beautiful backyard”—and a big one

The Turks & Caicos archipelago includes more than 40 islands, cays, sandbars, and rocks. It’s low-lying, dotted with remote beaches, and full of places that are best reached by boat.

From Provo, boaters head out to find their own quiet stretch of sand for a beach BBQ, a fishing spot, or a snorkel session. And for those who like a destination with a little more buzz, Provo also offers restaurants and bars you can reach by boat—using docks, jetties, mooring balls, and anchorages.

Since COVID-19, floating bars have also become popular stops for recreational boaters and charter boats alike.

A rescue John won’t forget

Ask any experienced captain and they’ll tell you: urgent situations are often the result of a series of small decisions.

One of John’s most memorable rescues began with a call from a mother. Her son and his girlfriend hadn’t returned from a personal watercraft ride on the Caicos Banks, south of Provo.

It was 7 p.m. in January—already dark. The couple had no way to contact anyone: no cell phone, no VHF, no lights, no flares, and no anchor. They were drifting with the wind and tidal currents.

John and his crew began searching by compensating for current and wind, using powerful searchlights, and periodically shutting down the engines to call out and listen. At 9 p.m., they found them—frightened and cold—with a blocked impeller. They were in less than a foot of water, far from services, and unsure of their location.

They got home safe. And it’s exactly why preparation—and a reliable on-water assistance plan—matters.

Smart safety habits before you leave Turtle Cove

John’s best advice is simple, practical, and proven:

  • Carry essential onboard safety equipment
  • Test all communications (marine and non-marine) before you go
  • Use your tethered kill switch
  • Bring a cell phone and file a float plan with family, friends, a local marina, or a port authority when possible
  • Stay calm, plan carefully, and respect the power of the sea
