If you’ve been around a ramp lately, you’ve probably heard the same phrase more than once: Clean. Drain. Dry. It’s not just a slogan—it’s quickly becoming one of the most important “pre-launch” steps Canadian boaters can take.

Aquatic invasive species (AIS) like zebra mussels spread fast, and once they’re established, they’re incredibly difficult (and expensive) to control. The result? More lakes and waterways are tightening rules around watercraft movement, inspections, and decontamination. For boaters, that can mean anything from a quick inspection at the ramp to restrictions on where and when you can launch.

Here’s the part that matters most: prevention is simple, but it has to be consistent.

Your launch-day checklist (the quick version):

  • Clean: Remove weeds, mud, and debris from your hull, trailer, bunks/rollers, anchor, lines, and gear.
  • Drain: Drain water from the bilge, livewells, ballast, coolers, and any compartments that hold water.
  • Dry: Let your boat and gear dry thoroughly before moving to a different body of water.

Why it matters (even if your boat “looks clean”):AIS can hitch a ride in places you don’t notice—tiny pockets of water, damp carpet, or hidden crevices on a trailer. One short tow from one lake to another can be enough to spread a problem that lasts for decades.

What boaters should expect this season:

  • More signage and education at ramps and marinas
  • Increased inspection programs in certain regions
  • Greater emphasis on compliance before launching

The bottom line:Boating is about freedom—but protecting the waters we love is part of keeping that freedom. A few extra minutes at the ramp helps keep lakes open, ecosystems healthy, and boating communities thriving.
