Have you done your mid-winter inspection?

Over the years working in the marine industry, I’ve come across some eye-opening situations during mid-winter inspections. A few of the most memorable include:

  • A facility used for indoor boat storage was broken into, and more than ten stern-drive units were stolen in a single night.
  • A sailboat took on so much water that its hull deformed against the cradle pads. Despite intact shrink-wrap, the damage was severe enough that the insurer deemed it a total loss.
  • Gear-lube plugs removed from stern drives or sail drives, allowing all the lubricant to drain unnoticed.
  • Raccoons moving in for the winter, turning boats into cozy dens—and nurseries.
  • A boat and trailer at a storage yard completely tipped over during a windstorm. With no staff regularly on site, it sat that way for weeks, resulting in permanent damage to both.

The long, grey stretch between Christmas and St Patrick’s Day is a perfect time to check in. Even a quick visit helps. Stop by, say hello, and let your mind wander to warm days on the water ahead.

While you’re there, though, it’s smart to balance nostalgia with a bit of practicality. A simple checklist can go a long way toward ensuring your boat makes it safely through winter and into spring:

  1. Overall condition: Is the shrink-wrap, cover, or tarp intact and secure? Is it rubbing against sharp edges? Are tie-downs solid and holding well?
  2. Cradle or stands: If stored on a cradle or stands, is the boat level? Are the pads evenly supporting the hull? Is the cradle itself stable on the ground?
  3. Trailer storage: If the boat is on a trailer, is it properly supported and blocked? Are the tires holding air? Are tie-downs and winch straps tight and secure?
  4. Hull inspection: Is the hull resting properly on pads or bunks? Do you see any signs of water intrusion, blistering, freezing damage, or stress cracks from settling?
  5. External machinery: Is the propeller secure? If the shaft is exposed, does it look clean and undamaged? For stern or sail drives, are they secure with plugs in place? Any visible damage to external components?
  6. Interior check: Any signs of animals nesting? How’s the ventilation and moisture level? If you’ve placed moisture-absorbing products, are they still effective or due for replacement? Are vents allowing airflow? Any mildew or heavy condensation?
  7. Batteries: Are cables properly positioned and not resting on the battery? Ideally, at least one terminal—preferably the negative—should be disconnected. Is the battery case swelling or bulging?
  8. Engines: Whether inboard or outboard, gas or diesel, inspect the exterior for cracking or leaks. Look over hoses and fuel filters, and check the engine block for cracks, stains, or signs of fluid loss.
  9. Bilge: Check for excess water, cracks, damage, or mildew. If water is present, a shop vacuum can be very helpful.
  10. Access points: Inspect hatches, doors, and locks to ensure everything is secure before you leave.
  11. If damage is found: Review your insurance policy and start planning your repair or recovery steps right away.

One final thought: winter is also prime dreaming season. Making plans now can help you avoid the spring scramble for contractors, parts, and dock time. It’s a great opportunity to map out the work that needs doing—and the adventures you want to take once the boat is back in the water.

Enjoy your visit. And say hello to your boat for me.
