A Passion for the Water
Mark’s love affair with the water started early. In his 20s, he lived in sunny Florida, where he spent at least five days a week on the water—whether by boat or surfboard. His passion turned professional when he operated a parasailing boat in Grand Bend during the late 1990s. For over ten years, he worked as a certified hoisting engineer with Mammoet, the same company that conducted the salvage operation of the Russian Nuclear Submarine Kursk in 2001. Mark holds numerous certifications, including Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP), and Marine Emergency Duties (MED-A3). He is also a certified fire protection specialist, avid sailor, and president of River Adventures Grand Bend Inc., specializing in watercraft rentals.
From Sea to Shore
Transitioning into the captain’s chair with C-Tow was a natural move for Mark. His wealth of experience, certifications, and unrelenting passion for the water made him the perfect fit. Mark has always been about more than just boating; he’s deeply committed to improving waterfront accessibility for all. His latest venture involved making boats wheelchair accessible for harbor tours, prominently featured at the Salt & Harvest Festival in Goderich.
The Dynamic Duo Behind the Mission
Mark isn’t alone in this mission. His partner, Beck, has played an instrumental role. Working together for nearly a decade, they form an unbeatable team that thrives on overcoming challenges. Beck is no stranger to the water herself, having lived on it for over 25 years. She’s a proud mother of three beautiful girls and even climbs wind turbines in her spare time! Inclusivity is Beck’s passion, especially when it comes to children.
Captain Beck’s Journey
Beck’s commitment to inclusivity extends beyond her professional endeavors. She believes that every child and adult should have the chance to experience the joy and freedom that boating can bring. From climbing wind turbines to managing her family, Beck is a powerhouse of energy and dedication.
One of the standout projects that Mark and Beck have undertaken is making boats wheelchair accessible. This initiative is particularly significant for the Salt & Harvest Festival in Goderich, one of the region’s most anticipated events. By modifying the boats to accommodate wheelchairs and installing a lift dockside, they are opening up new opportunities for individuals with mobility challenges to enjoy the beauty of Lake Huron.
The Challenges and Triumphs
Implementing wheelchair-accessible boats wasn’t without its challenges. From technical modifications to ensuring safety compliance, every step required meticulous planning and execution. But for Mark and Beck, the reward far outweighed the effort. Seeing the smiles on the faces of those who could finally experience a harbor tour was priceless.
